One of the greatest challenges educators face when maximizing their investment in technology is providing appropriate professional development. Unless teachers are properly trained in how to incorporate technology into the curricula, they cannot use technology to its greatest potential for student achievement. To address this problem C·R·E·A·T·E for Mississippi administers an online technology literacy assessment to all of the teachers in the Core Schools in order to provide baseline data, to measure changes in technology literacy, and to identify the technology professional development needs for the teachers at each school. An ongoing professional development plan aligned with Mississippi's Technology Standards for Teachers is developed that addresses the identified technology literacy needs in the Core Schools. In addition this professional development is designed to demonstrate the potential of technology to impact the instruction of critical academic skills for students.
Training Modules
Step by step workshop material has been developed and is given to the participants as well as placed electronically on the C·R·E·A·T·E for Mississippi Web site. Each training module is aligned with the Mississippi Technology Standards for Teachers and is taught in the context of classroom applications. Teachers are encouraged to develop notebooks of handouts or to bookmark the C·R·E·A·T·E for Mississippi Web site for quick reference.

Workshops
Ongoing professional development activities provided by the C·R·E·A·T·E for Mississippi staff, the Educational Technologists and Core teachers are offered throughout the school year in one-on-one sessions, mini-sessions, and large group sessions to meet the needs of the teachers. Most of these workshops are offered onsite at the local school in order to allow teachers the comfort of using their own equipment. In addition, onsite training reduces the amount of time that the teacher is out of the classroom thus minimizing loss of instructional time for students.
