Description of Activity:
As an overview or review of a unit on pronouns students will identify, define, and use pronouns through guided practice, independent practice, and on-line activities using the World Wide Web.
Objectives:
- The student will identify and define different types of pronouns.
- The student will use pronouns correctly by completing on-line quizzes as well as other on-line activities.
Materials/Equipment:
- Language arts textbooks
- Computer with Internet access for teacher demonstrations
- NetTV or large-screen monitor and projection device
- Student computers with Internet access
- Printer
- Handout 1: What Was That Pronoun?
Prerequisites (skills or background needed):
- Basic skills using the World Wide Web
- Basic word processing skills including editing, formatting, and proofreading. Students should be able to
- key in text
- select text
- add text
- change color of text (color coding)
- delete text
- preview and print text
Procedure
Teacher Component:
The teacher will
- bookmark the Web sites to be used in this lesson prior to class.

- use the Microsoft PowerPoint presentation What Was That Pronoun? to introduce or review pronouns. Provide the students a printed copy for use in taking notes.
- identify, discuss, and define the various types of pronouns including:
- personal
- demonstrative
- interrogative
- indefinite
- relative
- reflexive
- intensive
- provide examples of each type of pronoun using a computer and NetTV or projector and the following Web site, What is a Pronoun? / http://www.uottawa.ca/academic/arts/writcent/hypergrammar/pronouns.html.
- explain the importance of using the correct pronouns to allow for clear understanding of what has been stated, remembering that pronouns must agree in number and in person with their antecedents.
- demonstrate this concept and point out correct and incorrect ways that pronouns may be used with the Web site, Online Writing Lab / http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/grammar/g_pronuse.html.
- allow students to work in groups of two and to visit the Web site The English Professor / http://www.theenglishprofessor.com/pronouns.htm. Students should listen as each subjective, possessive, and objective pronoun is pronounced. Point out that a subjective pronoun also may be called a nominal pronoun.
- complete guided practice with students using the class textbook and allow students to voluntarily read aloud one sentence each.
- instruct students to visit the bookmarked Web site, ESL Quiz / http://a4esl.org/q/j/ck/mc-pronouns.html to take the quiz on pronouns. Students should
- read each sentence
- collaborate to determine the correct pronoun
- select the desired response
- proceed to complete the quiz
- raise their hands when they have completed the quiz
- wait until the teacher can provide an on-screen evaluation, assign, and record a group grade.
- allow the students to go to Crossword Puzzles—Pronouns / http://iteslj.org/cw/1/vm-pron.html and complete the crossword puzzle on pronouns.
- assign an out-of-class activity in which each student will draft a paragraph using at least 20 pronouns about his/her plans for summer. Of the 20 pronouns, no more than 10 can be duplicates. Correct grammar and punctuation must be used. Require students to use computers and key their paragraphs from their rough drafts during class the next day, print them, and submit them for a grade.

- learn to identify and define the various types of pronouns including: personal, demonstrative, interrogative, indefinite, relative, reflexive, and intensive.
- discuss as a class the examples shown by the teacher from the Web site What is a Pronoun? / http://www.uottawa.ca/academic/arts/writcent/hypergrammar/pronouns.html.
- learn that pronouns must agree in number and in person, with their antecedents. It is important to use the correct pronoun so the reader can understand to which noun a pronoun refers.
- listen as the teacher demonstrates correct and incorrect ways pronouns may be used using Web site Online Writing Lab / http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/grammar/g_pronuse.html.
- work in groups of two and visit the Web site The English Professor / http://www.theenglishprofessor.com/pronouns.htm. Complete the listening activity by clicking on and listening as each subjective, possessive, and objective pronoun is pronounced. Learn that a subjective pronoun also may be called a nominal pronoun.
- after completing a guided practice using the class textbook, voluntarily read aloud one sentence each as called upon by the teacher.
- visit the Web site ESL Quiz / http://a4esl.org/q/j/ck/mc-pronouns.html to take the quiz on pronouns following these instructions:
- Read each sentence.
- Collaborate to determine the correct pronoun.
- Select the desired response.
- Complete the quiz.
- Raise hands when completed.
- Wait until the teacher can provide an on-screen evaluation and assign a group grade.
- Go to Crossword Puzzles—Pronouns / http://iteslj.org/cw/1/vm-pron.html and complete the crossword puzzle on pronouns without having to check or show answers or ask for a hint.
- be assigned an out-of-class activity in which each student will draft a paragraph using at least 20 pronouns about his or her plans for the summer. Of the 20 pronouns, only 10 may be duplicates. Correct grammar and punctuation must be used.
- take turns using the computers during class the next day to key their paragraphs from the rough drafts, print the paragraphs for a grade, and submit them to the teacher. Draft copies and printed copies will determine the grade.
Accommodations:
- Students may work in larger groups if enough computers are not available.
Extension Activities:
- Students may take additional on-line quizzes on pronouns at the Web site List of Interactive Quizzes / http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/quiz_list.htm.
From Interactive Quizzes, click the down arrow below GUIDE TO GRAMMAR AND WRITING and select pronouns to review pronouns. Scroll down to PRONOUN USAGE and select desired quizzes as review.
- Students may use Microsoft Excel and as many different pronouns as they can think of to create and print crossword puzzle or a word-search puzzle that can be exchanged with another student or group.
- Students may color-code the pronouns in the individual paragraphs in the following ways to demonstrate understanding of these two classifications of pronouns: subjective pronoun in blue and objective pronouns in orange. Students may want to substitute their school colors when doing this activity.
