| Am I Worth My Weight in Gold on Another Planet? |

| This is one portion of a cross-curricular lesson in mathematics and science. In the science classroom, the student will follow the lesson plan "Solar System Tourist Agent" and use the World Wide Web to research the nine planets. In the mathematics classroom, the student will be given a formula to use to calculate his or her weight on each of the planets in our solar system and on the earth’s moon. - Houlka Attendance Center |

| Calendar Creations about the Civil War |

| This lesson plan provides a unique way to research and organize data about the Civil War. The students will carry out their research using teacher-provided Web sites or sites found from the students’ own World Wide Web searches. The students will research Civil War events occurring during one month of the year, recording specific events and the dates on which they occurred. They will list each event by month, day, and year on a one-month calendar of their own creation. The students will work in small groups of two to four based on class size and the number of computers available for use. Calendar listings will be color coded so that the reader will have visual cues related to the sequence of events during the war. | Students will discover Pi in this activity by measuring the diameter and circumference of various circular items. Students will visit Web sites to learn additional mathematical information about Pi as well as some fun facts. | Carpet Your Castle |

| The students will estimate the area of the classroom floor, then measure the floor in order to calculate the area in square feet. Students will then visit Web sites to convert their measurement from square feet to square yards. After the teacher has checked this measurement, students will then comparison shop for carpet by using the Internet. | After studying geometric shapes and ideas, the students will identify geometric shapes and ideas in magazine photographs. Upon identifying geometric shapes and ideas in magazine photographs, the students will use the digital camera to photograph five interior and/or five exterior school structures. After transferring the digital photographs from computer diskettes to hard copies, the students will identify geometric shapes in these photographs and the reasons they were used in these structures. | Geometry and Measurement of the World's Most Famous Structures |

| This lesson is designed to create awareness in students about how geometry is used in the everyday world in which they live. The student will learn how to find and investigate Web sites for specific information. This lesson is designed to integrate social studies and technology into mathematics classrooms and to show students how to do research on the World Wide Web. The student will use the Web sites and links of well-known structures to locate the answers to specific questions related to polygons and other geometric shapes of 3-dimensional objects, measurement of the buildings, and formulas used to figure the dimensions of these structures.
