Marks is a city located in Quitman County, Mississippi. The city has a total population of 1, 758 and is rapidly increasing. It is the county seat of Quitman County. The town lies snugly along the Coldwater River, one of the prettiest and most consistent streams in the state.
Marks was not so many years ago a plantation, the land surrounding the present town site and constituting it belonging to the late L. Marks. Mr. Marks, it is said, was reluctant to dispose of the required land upon which to establish the town, but was finally persuaded by Judge M.E. Denton, who was at the head of the Marks Townsite Company to let the people have the necessary land upon which to build. In turn it is at once decided to name the new town Marks in honor of the original owner of the land. Previous to that the station was known as Riverside.
Before this time Marks did not offer much pretension as a busy center, but its natural advantage of location, together with the rich agricultural country surrounding it, soon brought recognition of its advantages and superior opportunities. It may be said that it is only within the last five or six year that Marks has developed into a real town.
The various religious denominations are well represented at Marks and all get along in harmony. Many churches are renovating and building new churches to accommodate their membership growth. Marks presently have four schools in their district. They are Madison S. Palmer High School, Quitman County Vocational School, Quitman County Middle School, and Quitman County Elementary School.
Marks, Mississippi is constantly growing and improving.
