Community Information

North Bolivar School District is one of five small school districts in Bolivar County. The school district is located in a small agriculture community in the heart of the Delta. It is on the northern end of the county and right on the Coahoma County line. The major industry in this small rural community is farming. The district serves approximately 900 students from Shelby and several other surrounding communities of the same make up and socioeconomic status. The district is 97% African American with the remaining 3% consisting of Hispanics (2%) and Caucasian (1%). All of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Shelby Middle School is a C·R·E·A·T·E Core School. This school is unique in that it serves students in grades 4-7. There are 234 students, 15 teachers, five AmeriCorps Tutors, a math specialist, a reading instructional coach, and the principal. While the school is a Priority School many students are performing at the Proficient or Advanced Level on the MCT. Our students have the opportunity to participate in Science Fairs, Reading Fairs, Spelling Bees, and Math Bowls. This year, thanks to C·R·E·A·T·E, eleven students serve on the Student Tech Team. There are at least five computers in each classroom and each computer is connected to the Internet. There is a wealth of resources for teachers and students in the District.

The school mascot is a Jaguar and the school colors are gold and royal blue. All students in the North Bolivar School District must wear uniforms. The colors for the shirts are sky blue and gold and the pants are khaki. Shirts are alternated between the high and middle school. On Mondays blue shirts are worn at the middle school and gold shirts are worn at the high school and vice versa.

The town of Shelby, where the middle and high school are located has a population of approximately 1,500 people. There are several small variety stores, two gas stations that also sell hot food and snacks, and four small fast food places that sell burgers, fries, and chicken. Major shopping is done in Cleveland, (the county seat), which is about 18 miles; Clarksdale, a city about 25 miles north in Coahoma County. Other shopping is done in Memphis, Jackson, and Greenville.
